Choose a coast, not a generic beach label
Nungwi and Kendwa suit travellers who want a busier northern base and easier access to deeper water. Paje and Jambiani suit travellers who enjoy a wide tidal landscape, kitesurfing culture and long village-backed shoreline. Matemwe is quieter and useful for reef-focused trips, while its own swimming conditions still change with the tide.
Plan around a living ocean
A white-sand photograph says nothing about current, wind, coral, boats or low tide. Check local tide and weather information each day, use reef-safe practices and never treat wildlife as guaranteed entertainment.
Remember that beaches border communities
Fishing, seaweed farming, boat repair and family life continue beside tourism. Dress with awareness away from resort grounds, ask before photographing workers and avoid walking through private compounds as shortcuts.
