Zanzibar tides and sea safety

The ocean controls the beach day in Zanzibar; ignoring tide, wind and current can turn a beautiful plan into a stranded walk, damaged reef or dangerous swim.

What to know

  • East-coast water can retreat far from the beach at low tide
  • Tide time changes daily and differs by location
  • Reef flats can contain sharp coral, urchins and fragile seagrass
  • Local warnings override a fixed itinerary

Check the tide for the exact beach

A general Zanzibar forecast is not enough. Ask the property or operator when water will be suitable for the planned activity and use a current local tide source on the day.

Do not judge safety by colour

Turquoise water can still hold current, boat traffic, coral or sudden depth. Swim in recommended areas, supervise children closely and avoid entering alone when conditions are unclear.

Walk the reef flat lightly

Use a trained local guide where appropriate, avoid stepping on living coral or seaweed plots and never collect shells or animals from protected areas.

  • Wear suitable protective footwear when advised
  • Carry water and sun protection
  • Return before incoming water cuts off the route
  • Do not handle starfish for photographs
  • Follow kite and boat exclusion zones
