Karisoke, Dian Fossey and gorilla conservation
Dian Fossey's work transformed global attention to mountain gorillas, but Karisoke's real legacy is a continuing Rwandan research and conservation institution—not a story that ended in 1985.

What to know
- Dian Fossey established Karisoke Research Center on 24 September 1967
- The name combines Karisimbi and Bisoke
- The original field site lay between the two volcanoes
- The Ellen DeGeneres Campus is a modern conservation and education centre near the park
Two tents between Karisimbi and Bisoke
Fossey founded Karisoke in 1967 and named it from the surrounding volcanoes: 'Kari' from Karisimbi and 'soke' from Bisoke. Long-term observation helped change scientific and public understanding of mountain gorillas.
Do not erase Rwandan conservation leadership
The famous individual story can eclipse decades of work by Rwandan researchers, trackers, veterinarians, park staff and communities. A responsible account treats Fossey as an important chapter within a living institution and a wider regional effort.
Choose between interpretation and a mountain memorial hike
The Ellen Campus offers accessible conservation interpretation and research context. A trek associated with the former Karisoke site and Fossey memorial is a separate, strenuous park activity whose present name, route and access must be confirmed.
- Check current booking channels
- Do not disturb memorial spaces
- Allow for steep and muddy conditions
- Use the campus to understand current science
