A crater day and a summit expedition are not the same
Bisoke is commonly approached as a long day hike; Karisimbi requires a more demanding high-altitude plan. Current route length, overnight arrangements and permitted access must come from the park or an authorised operator.
Fitness does not remove altitude risk
Move steadily, disclose symptoms and accept a guide's decision to turn back. Mountain weather can be cold and wet even when Musanze begins clear.
Inspect the mountain plan
Confirm guide, permit, clothing, food, water, porter support, overnight equipment where relevant and emergency arrangements before leaving.
