A conservation recovery with a difficult beginning

Addo was created after severe hunting and conflict had reduced the area's elephant population. The modern park's recovery matters, but it should be told alongside the wider human and ecological costs that preceded protection.

Use waterholes patiently

Elephants and other wildlife may approach or leave suddenly. Stop without blocking the road, maintain escape space, stay inside the vehicle and let animals cross first. A crowded waterhole is not permission to move closer.

Give Addo dedicated time

Stay near the main camp or southern access depending on the onward route. An overnight stay creates early and late viewing opportunities and avoids a punishing return drive from the central Garden Route.

Useful for southern access and onward travel towards Gqeberha or the N2.
