Why the park boundary is not enough

Seasonal movement and drought refuges link the protected core with community lands. Research behind the Amboseli Conservation Program showed that livestock, wildlife and pastoral land use had to be understood together rather than treating local people as outside the ecosystem.

Conservation has involved conflict and negotiation

Proposals to exclude Maasai use and debates over control and tourism revenue shaped modern Amboseli. Community-based conservation developed partly in response, aiming to protect movement while recognising local rights and livelihoods.
