How the conservancy model works
Participating landowners lease land for conservation and tourism under local agreements. The Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association describes direct lease payments as a defining benefit, alongside employment and community programmes. Travellers should still examine the specific conservancy rather than assume every partnership works identically.
Reserve and conservancy are not the same
The national reserve is county-managed protected land with its own fees and rules. Conservancies are separate community-land partnerships. Some may permit guided walks, night drives or controlled off-road viewing that is unavailable elsewhere, but current rules take priority.
Make cultural tourism reciprocal
A village or homestead visit should not turn people into scenery. Use locally agreed visits, clear pricing and consent for photography.
