Murchison Falls · Savannah wildlife
Murchison Falls game drives
The northern savannah opens the Murchison landscape: tracks cross grassland and woodland used by giraffes, elephants, buffalo, antelope, predators and prolific birdlife.

At a glance
What to know
- Early morning and late afternoon are usually the most comfortable periods
- Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed
- The drive is a separate experience from the Nile cruise
- A knowledgeable local guide adds context, tracking skill and safer navigation
Reading the landscape
A good drive is not a race between species. Guides read tracks, alarm calls, shade, water and recent animal movement. The reward is a broader understanding of how the Nile, grassland and woodland sustain the park’s wildlife.
What travellers may encounter
Giraffes, elephants, buffalo, hartebeest, Uganda kob and warthogs are characteristic of the northern sector. Lions and leopards occur, but no itinerary should sell a guaranteed predator sighting.
- Carry binoculars
- Stay inside the vehicle unless a guide confirms a safe designated area
- Do not pressure guides to crowd animals
- Use quiet voices and avoid feeding wildlife
Build a complete Murchison day
Pair the drive with the boat cruise for two distinct viewpoints, or leave the afternoon quieter and visit the Top of the Falls on a separate day. Two or three nights give a more relaxed rhythm than arriving, driving and departing in a single rush.
