Cultivated slopes below the park

Banana, coffee and mixed farms use fertile volcanic soils and mountain water around many southern and eastern communities. This lived landscape is not inside every trekking route, but it is part of Kilimanjaro's environmental story.

Montane forest and the protected mountain

UNESCO records that the park was expanded in 2005 to include natural montane forest previously managed as forest reserve. The forest supports water catchment, habitat and the visual transition from farmland to high mountain.

Heath, moorland and alpine terrain

As temperature, exposure and moisture change, dense forest gives way to giant heath and moorland forms, then sparse alpine desert and the summit's rock, ice and snow. Stay on designated paths and avoid damaging slow-growing vegetation.
