Kruger self-drive and rest camps

Kruger's public-road system makes a real safari accessible without a luxury lodge, but independence only works when distances, gate times and wildlife rules are respected.

At a glance

What to know

  • The park has nine entrance gates
  • Main rest camps provide different regional bases
  • Entrance and camp gates close at published times
  • Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed

Plan by region, not by wish list

Pick a gate and camp combination that fits the available days. A route that looks short on a normal map can take hours at park speed with wildlife stops. Keep the final stretch comfortably inside gate time.

Let patience replace chasing

Watch water, shade, tracks, bird alarms and the behaviour of other animals. Pull over safely, give sightings room and move on when congestion begins to harm the encounter.

The vehicle is not a protective bubble

Remain inside except at designated places, keep doors closed, obey speed limits and never allow bodies through windows or sunroofs.

  • Carry water and a current park map
  • Fuel before long sections
  • Allow extra time beyond minimum estimates
  • Never feed wildlife
  • Check daily notices and road conditions

Accommodation planning

Where to base yourself

These are useful stay areas, not paid rankings. Live AfriSawari properties appear only after host verification and marketplace onboarding.

Skukuza and Lower Sabie region

Well-serviced southern base for first-time visitors, with busier roads in peak periods.

Satara region

Central grassland base that deserves several nights rather than a rushed transfer.

Olifants and Letaba region

River landscapes and a useful bridge between central and northern travel.

Punda Maria and Pafuri region

Remote northern choice for birding and travellers comfortable with longer logistics.
