Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope

The Cape of Good Hope is the peninsula's famous southwestern headland, but it is not Africa's southernmost point and it should not be sold with that false claim.

What to know

  • Cape Agulhas—not Cape Point—is Africa's southernmost point
  • Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope are distinct nearby landmarks
  • The area protects fynbos, coast and wildlife
  • Wind and visibility can change rapidly

Correct the geography before telling the story

Cape Point is a high promontory with lighthouse viewpoints; the Cape of Good Hope is the celebrated headland nearby. Neither is the southernmost point of the continent, and the Atlantic and Indian Oceans do not meet along a fixed visible line here.

Give the landscape more weight than the signboard

Fynbos, cliffs, beaches and marine exposure make the protected area worth several hours. Walk a marked route, watch seabirds and use viewpoints slowly instead of driving only to the famous photograph.

Keep wildlife wild

Baboons and other animals can be dangerous when people feed or crowd them. Keep food secured, maintain distance and follow ranger instructions.

  • Check current gate and payment information
  • Carry water and wind protection
  • Stay back from cliff edges
  • Do not feed or pose with wildlife
  • Leave time for the return drive before dark

Simon's Town

Practical for combining Cape Point with Boulders and the False Bay coast.

Noordhoek and Kommetjie

Good for a quieter Atlantic-side peninsula base and scenic road travel.

Central Cape Town

Works as a day-trip base, but road time and congestion must be allowed.
