Why Akagera changes the idea of Rwanda

Rwanda is marketed internationally through mountain gorillas, but Akagera replaces steep rainforest with open savannah, woodland, papyrus wetland and lake. The contrast makes Volcanoes and Akagera a commercially strong two-park itinerary.

A recovery story with evidence behind it

After heavy wildlife loss and land pressure around the 1990s, the 2010 management partnership strengthened protection and tourism. Lions were reintroduced in 2015, eastern black rhinos in 2017 and 2019, and southern white rhinos in 2021, followed by a further major translocation in 2025. These milestones restored the presence of the Big Five, but no individual sighting is guaranteed.

Give the park at least one full safari rhythm

A long south-to-north drive can reveal major habitat changes, while an overnight stay creates space for a Lake Ihema boat, guided drive or night activity. A rushed Kigali return is possible but weaker: much of the day disappears into road travel.
